Why I became interested in fitness
I was working out with my husband in the gym and on the big screen TV they were showing a Fitness Competition. I thought “I could do that” and I told him so. He was skeptical saying how much it would take not having a background in gymnastics or dance as most competitors have, and the limitations I had being a mother and in my 30’s. That was all I needed to hear – I set the goal of competing, which I accomplished within 1 year, and I am still going.
When did I first start working out
I was always into physical fitness. In high school I won track and field competitions in hurdles, relay and sprinting in the Provincial Championships. This progressed into aerobics. At the gym I met a woman who competed in Bodybuilding at an international level and she took me through the ropes. From the first time I started training with iron I was hooked. I loved the feeling of the muscles burning from the pump, and my body responded quickly. I did not even think about competing in Fitness Competitions until well into my 30’s and after my second child. It wasn’t until just after the 2004 contest that I found out I was 3 months pregnant with my 3rd child. That put an end to my participation in the Nationals that year. A few seasons off and now I am back having competed in April of this year.
Other physical activities I do to stay fit
I was a competitive beach volleyball player in my 20’s and I love a good pick-up game down at the beach or while on vacation in the winter. During the summer I can be found rollerblading the Vancouver seawall most sunny days with my children and friends. Don’t get me started on my new passion – yoga, I would recommend this to all for overall well being.
My goals within the fitness industry
I became a licensed BCRPA Personal Trainer during my last pregnancy and have began a career instructing others for competitions and helping people get into the shape they have been dreaming of. I will be competing again this fall in fitness competitions. I’ll even be trying new types of competitions over the next year for strength and speed. Being 40 in the Fitness industry – I feel stronger and better all the time. Wish It…Dream It…Do It
I have built my own studio so clients can come and get everything in one place. I am preparing several seminars and Internet courses for people everywhere who want to get into shape; nutritional planning; compete; and for women to have Fit Pregnancies and Post-Pregnancy programs.
